Whither CT?

A quote from recently resigned deputy editor Bonnie Kristian on the state of the firewall between business ops and journalism at Christianity Today:

“Nicole1 has repeatedly affirmed C.T.’s journalism and C.T.’s editorial independence even though she’s violating it,” Ms. Kristian said. “In the meantime, Tom2 has been openly hostile.”

Near the conclusion of my time at Wheaton College I recall an essay published entitled ‘Whither Wheaton’ raising some middle-term questions about the institutions identity and direction. Evangelicalism doesn’t have an explicit magisterium or doctrinal confession that defines its boundaries. Often, it’s boundaries have been defined by the network of organizations and ancillary institutions (education, media, social work) that serve as gravity wells for cooperative work among evangelical aligned actors (be they churches, political figures, philanthropists, or media influences). ‘Whither …." has become a genre of literature that seems to target a new institution or organization in that constellation every 2 or 3 years. This has only accelerated since Trump’s election in 2016 (with White evangelical voters being the cornerstone of his coalition). It’s predominately institutional stances towards culture war issues that power the genre. The central question is typically institutional viability (if not fiscally, then whether the institutional identity can actually hold together in practice).

Off the top of my head I recall such entries in the genre involving Bethany Christian Services, World Vision, and Wheaton College (a reliable (an?)protagonist). CT’s turn appears to have arrived.
