Steve Rosenberg reporting from Moscow:

But on Thursday, President Vladimir Putin said nothing about the drone assault. The news bulletins on Russian TV channels barely mentioned it.

When Russian newspapers reported the story the following day, I detected a common thread in their coverage: a coordinated message, perhaps, for the domestic audience.

It can be summed up as this: “However bad it is for us, Ukraine’s suffering more”.

A photograph showing a person wearing a dark blue hooded jacket and jeans, walking a small, fluffy orange dog on a leash along a green, grassy path. In the midground, several tall metal electrical transmission towers stand in front of a line of green trees. Looming behind the trees and dominating the background sky is a massive, thick plume of dark grey smoke billowing from a large, unseen fire or explosion.
